Basketball is the sport where American betting vocabulary meets a British audience, and that is the first thing to get straight. A point spread is a handicap, a moneyline is a match winner, a total is an over/under. Once the words line up, the markets are simpler than football: there is no draw, and scores are high enough that lines move in half-points.

Spreads and totals are usually priced near 1.91 on both sides. That price, not the line itself, is where the bookmaker margin sits: two outcomes at 1.91 imply a book of about 105 per cent.
NBA, EuroLeague and the British Basketball League
The NBA is the deepest market by a distance: every game carries hundreds of prices, including quarter and half lines, and player props on both starters and bench players. The EuroLeague gets solid coverage at European-facing bookmakers, with spreads, totals and the main player props. Domestic British basketball is thin almost everywhere, so if that is your interest, check before you deposit.
One practical difference: NBA tip-offs fall between 11pm and 3am UK time. If you plan to bet in-play you are betting overnight, which is worth knowing before you set any deposit limits.

In-play basketball
Basketball reprices faster than any other major sport, because scoring events arrive every 20 seconds or so. Live spreads and totals move constantly, and a 10-0 run will shift a line by several points before the next timeout. That makes live betting attractive and unforgiving in equal measure: the market absorbs information quickly, and stale prices rarely last.
Reading American odds
Many basketball prices are published in the American format. A minus number is the stake needed to win 100; a plus number is the return on a 100 stake. So -110 is 1.91 in decimals, and +150 is 2.50. UK-facing bookmakers let you switch the display in account settings.
The rules that apply
Betting on basketball from Great Britain requires an operator licensed by the UK Gambling Commission, with the minimum age set at 18. Promotional offers must show their significant terms alongside the headline number. Do basketball bets include overtime?
Yes. Unless a market states otherwise, moneyline, spread and totals bets on basketball settle including overtime. This is the opposite of football, and it is the mistake new basketball bettors make most often.
What happens if a player does not play?
Player props are normally voided if the player takes no part in the game. If they play even one minute, the bet stands. Bookmakers differ on injury withdrawals announced before tip-off, so read the rules.
Why is the spread a half-point?
To remove the possibility of a push. A line of -6.5 cannot land exactly, so every bet wins or loses. Whole-number lines can tie, in which case stakes are returned.
