If you want to bet on football from the UK, the practical question is not which bookmaker is "best" overall but which one prices the markets you actually use. This page covers the markets that matter in British football betting, how they are priced, and which of the operators we review cover them properly.
The markets that carry most football betting
Almost all football turnover in the UK sits in a handful of markets. Everything else is built on top of them.
| Market | What you are backing | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Match result (1X2) | Home win, draw or away win over 90 minutes plus stoppage time | Arsenal 1.85 / Draw 3.60 / Chelsea 4.20 |
| Both teams to score | Each side scores at least one goal | Yes 1.72 / No 2.05 |
| Over/under goals | Total goals above or below a line, usually 2.5 | Over 2.5 at 1.95 pays £19.50 on a £10 stake |
| Double chance | Two of the three results, at shorter odds | Home or draw 1.28 |
| Correct score | The exact final score | 2-1 at 8.00 |
| Anytime goalscorer | A named player scores at any point | Haaland 1.70 |
| Asian handicap | Result with a goal start, no draw | -1.5 at 2.30 |
Odds in the UK are quoted both as fractions (6/4) and decimals (2.50). They describe the same thing: decimal odds include your stake, fractions do not.
Premier League, EFL and the rest of the pyramid
Coverage thins out quickly below the top flight, and that is where operators differ. Premier League matches get 200 or more markets each across every bookmaker. The Championship, League One and League Two get 80 to 150 at the larger books and far fewer elsewhere. Non-league and women's football are the real separator: some operators price the National League and the WSL in depth, others only offer a match result.
If you follow a lower-league club, check the market count on a midweek fixture before you open an account. It is the fastest test of whether a bookmaker is serious about football.
Where to bet on football
These are the operators in our bookmaker rankings with the strongest football coverage.

| Bwin | Strong European club football and in-play goal markets |
| 888Sport | Wide bet-builder options on Premier League fixtures |
| LeoVegas | Mobile-first sportsbook with strong Premier League bet builders |
In-play football betting
Football is the sport in-play betting was built for: a 90-minute match with few scoring events and long gaps between them gives prices time to move. Next goal, next corner and next card markets reprice continuously, and cash out lets you close a position before the final whistle. See our guide to live betting for how prices are formed while a match is running.
One thing to know before you use it: the odds you see in-play are already adjusted for the delay between the pitch and your screen. If you are watching a stream, you are usually behind the trading room, not ahead of it.
Video assistant referees and settlement
VAR changed how football bets settle. A goal ruled out after a review means the bet settles on the corrected outcome, not on what the ground celebrated. Bookmakers publish rules on when a market is considered decided; most now wait for the referee's final decision before paying out in-play goal markets. Our page on the VAR covers how the review process works.
Football betting and the rules in Great Britain
Every bookmaker taking bets from Great Britain must hold a licence from the UK Gambling Commission. That licence is what gives you segregated client funds, a published complaints route, and access to self-exclusion. Bonus offers must show their significant terms next to the headline figure, so a "free bet" with a wagering requirement has to say so where you can see it. The minimum age is 18. Read our guide to UK bookmakers for how licensing works in practice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular football bet in the UK?
The match result market, followed by both teams to score and over/under 2.5 goals. Accumulators combining several match results are the most common bet slip on a Saturday.
Do football bets include extra time?
No. Unless the market says otherwise, football bets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties are separate markets in cup competitions.
What happens if a football match is abandoned?
Most bookmakers void bets on an abandoned match unless it is replayed within a stated window, usually 48 hours. Markets already decided, such as first goalscorer once a goal has been scored, may still stand. Check the operator's rules.
Can I bet on football from the United States?
Only through an operator licensed in your state. Online sports betting is legal in 30 states plus Washington DC as of September 2026, and the minimum age is 21 in most of them. See our page on American bookmakers.
