Uefa Nations League Football

The UEFA Nations League is a tournament between national football teams belonging to UEFA. The first edition began in 2018 and ended on June 9, 2019. The participating teams are 55 and are divided into 4 Leagues with promotions and relegations. The first competition was won by Portugal. The trophy is awarded in odd years. The teams that obtain a good placing improve their European ranking and can be selected for the qualifications for the European and World Championships. The final phase of the Nations League for the attribution of the title is composed of 4 teams that will compete, first in the semi-finals and then in the finals for the third or fourth place and for the first or second place.

The regulation

The tournament format was approved by the UEFA Executive Committee in 2014. The 55 national teams are divided into Leagues based on the ranking obtained after the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. There are 4 Leagues or Divisions:

League A : the best 12 teams are included.

League B : the 12 teams from thirteenth to twenty-fourth place are included.

League C : 15 teams are included, from twenty-fifth to thirty-ninth place.

League D : 16 teams are included, from fortieth to fifty-fifth place.

Each league is divided into 4 Groups of 3 or 4 teams. This is, however, a format that UEFA is verifying and, if necessary, will be modified with the agreement of the participating Nations. The winning teams of the 4 groups of League A will face each other in a final phase, where the semi-finals and finals will be played. The leagues are composed of the following teams.

This event takes place before the European Championships and the World Cup. As previously written, achieving a good placement allows you to have an additional chance to participate in other international tournaments. UEFA distributes 4 places for the European Championships. The principle is to extract the best 4 teams from each League, for a total of 16 teams. Often, however, it turns out that many of these teams have already obtained the approval to participate. From this group will emerge the 4 national teams that will access the European Championships, together with the other 20 already qualified.
