The story
The first US National Championships tournament was held in 1874, shortly after the creation of the rules for the game of tennis. This event began as an entertainment for high society and became, over the years, one of the most famous tournaments in the world. We will divide the years of the US Open into periods, remembering the strongest athletes of this trophy. Let’s start with the post-war years:
The period (1946 – 1955) saw the triumph of American athletes such as Kramer and Parker.
The 1960s saw the success of Australian tennis players such as Ken Rosewall, Malcolm Anderson and Ashley Cooper.
The 1970s saw the tournament go professional and change its name to the US Open. Arthur Ashe was the first African American to win this championship. These are the years of Nastase, Rosewall, John Newcombe. For women athletes, we remember Virginia Wade and the very famous Billie Jean King.
The 1980s were a great time. The US Open featured Connors, Lendl, John McEnroe, Wilander and Becker. On the women’s side, we celebrated champions Chris Evert, Hana Mandlikova and Steffi Graf.
The 1990s are remembered for the endless meetings between Sampras and Agassi and between Graf, Martina Navratilova and Sabatini.
The 2000s recall 4 male protagonists: Federer, Nadal, Murray and Novak Dokovic. 2015 is remembered by Italian fans for the incredible final between Pennetta and Vinci. For women, the leading figures are the unbeatable Williams sisters.
The US Open courts are hard, a fast surface. The main stadium, dedicated to Arthur Ashe, was opened in 1997 and can hold about 24,000 spectators.
